Delegates of Member States, Mission staff, UN agencies and NGO representatives: Please join us for this  forward-looking, informative side event to the 53rd Session of Commission on Social Development

Thursday, Feb 12, 3pm to 4:30pm

General Assembly Building, Conference Room C

In the most advanced industrially developed nations, poverty and inequality are growing at an alarming speed, while in many developing nations of Latin America and Asia new approaches to social development are being carried out resulting in greatly decreased levels of poverty and raised standards of living for historically marginalized people.  What are the lessons?

Commission on Voluntary Service & Action (CVSA) promotes volunteer service with grassroots, community-based nongovernmental organizations responsive to both immediate

needs of people, exemplifying what government policy could be, while also organizing to reach the systemic causes of hunger, lack of access to health care, housing, decent employment, legal recourse and more. As volunteerism grows around the globe, voluntary service innovators are forging new strategies to bring people together to tackle these problems.

This panel will present two examples of building independent, volunteer-based organizations (one in a wealthy country, one in a very poor country) that materially have and continue to decrease suffering and advance social development where they work. Speakers will discuss what obstacles they have encountered from governmental bodies with the effect of hindering what would be successful outcomes and how they have worked to overcome them.

CVSA volunteer staff will provide information about CVSA's unique program. UNV staff will discuss how voluntary service for social development can be integrated into the Sustainable Development agenda.

The new edition of INVEST YOURSELF: Guide to Action will be presented and distributed, launching the 2015 campaign for CVSA’s 70th Anniversary Edition of the most comprehensive catalogue of fulltime, nongovernment organization volunteer opportunities throughout the U.S. and the world, addressing the essential and basic needs of people.
