The UN Summit on Sustainable Development was held on September 25-27, 2015 at UN New York headquarters, convening a record number of heads of state. All 193 nations unanimously adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and pledged their commitment to the new
The 35-page 2030 Agenda is the product of an unprecedented 3 year long transparent, participatory process that was inclusive of all nations, hundreds of nongovernmental organizations, grassroots social movements and others. This is a program each government agreed to carry out in their own country, with the involvement of all sectors of the people of the nation.
Titled “Transforming Our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” the agreement to implement the set of 17 Goals with 169 associated targets which are integrated and indivisible, came into effect on January 1, 2016 and the aim is to achieve these Goals in each county by the year 2030.
Since then, the U.S. government has yet to formalize a planning body for the 2030 Agenda fos Sustainable Development, nor an open and participatory coordinating and oversight body for all stakeholders to monitor progress towards achieving these 17 Goals in the U.S. Over 130 other countries have already given voluntary reports in the last three years to the UN about their progress so far and plans for implementation of the 17 Goals.
It is up to us "the people" to mobilize and build the groundswell of demand for and involvement in making these Goals a reality in the U.S. and around the world!
In early 2016, CVSA launched a nationwide COMMUNITY EDUCATION CAMPAIGN for the IMPLEMENTATION of the SDGs in the U.S., to involve community-based nongovernment organizations, nonprofits serving people in need, faith organizations and schools in making the 2030 SDGs in the U.S. a reality.
From the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development:
“All countries and all stakeholders, acting in collaborative partnership, will implement this plan. We are resolved to free the human race from the tyranny of poverty and want and to heal and secure our planet. We are determined to take the bold and transformative steps which are urgently needed to shift the world on to a sustainable and resilient path. As we embark on this collective journey, we pledge that no one will be left behind.”
CVSA looks forward to enabling more organizations of concerned people in the US to join forces in promoting these Goals for implementation here in the US as well as around the world.
There has been no coverage in the mainstream US media explaining the 2030 Goals to the public, and no public acknowledgement or discussion of the 17 universal Goals by U.S. political leaders about how the SDGs will be implemented as policy in the U.S. and how we can participate in that planning and monitoring. There is no time to lose.
The leadership and impetus for the implementation of the 2030 SDGs has to come from those of us “on the ground” who have been addressing these needs and problems for decades.
CVSA filed a report on July 10, 2016 with the 2016 High Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development about current conditions in the U.S. in relation to the Goals and CVSA's work towards the implementation of the SDGs through our nationwide Community Education Campaign for the Implementation of the SDGs.

On June 16, 2017 CVSA filed a second report with the 2017 High Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development about our contribution to the Implementation of the 2030 SDGs in the United States with a focus on our work to build an Enabling Environment for the 2030 Agenda in the United States, to “create ownership of the SDGs” at the community level and to inspire government to take steps to inform and build engagement of all stakeholders in the implementation of the Goals and targets in the United States, and to act in solidarity with all other nations struggling to implement the Goals.
